learn your running - with the Telford Harriers Beginners Club

What's been happening with the Beginners?

Beginner's Diary - 8th July..

"This week I was relieved we had 18 beginners; after taking my group on last weeks obstacle course of nettles, brambles etc.
This week to avoid any panic attacks by my group, we swapped routes with the other group - other plus wasto avoid any boredom setting in.
Rich the Doc, Andy & Lou took their group on a 2 Miles 20 min RUN !! around pool view and the Codfather and no one stopped for chips.
My group had come with cash in their pockets, - not for a 'membership fee' but for... a quick purchase of another kind  - 'Cone of Chips !'
NOTE an average 400g serving will cost them 956 calories!!
I may decide to take them to the Codfarther next week as a treat and to remove those hunger pains.
Nicky, Sara & I took our group in a loop around Lawley Dr and back along Dawley Rd. (2.02 miles - 228 Calories) Nicky stretched our group by allowing them to Jog up the inclines. Sara held slightly back for the one beginner on her last 1/4 of a mile. - [this was the beginners 1st night]"

Beginner's Diary  - 1st July..
This week we had 18 brave souls’ and again the group was split into two, based on ability. Naomi, Rich & Co. took the more experienced folk on the 1.9m route.
Grace & I Sedge’s group, had a more tricky 'off road' fun this week as we had some obstacles i.e. nettles, brambles and some very long grass on a small stretch of our ‘new course’ One definite  area to avoid next week ‘should have done a recce’. Some did not enjoy the jungle part of our 30 mins/1.9 mile outing.
All the groups performed light stretches"

Beginner's Diary - 24th June..
This week we had 19 beginners and split the group into two sets [not had any experience of running] and [those that had run before joining the Harriers Beginners Club.]
Rob, Lou and Rich took the more experience folk on the reverse of last weeks 1.7m route so they could enjoy two downhill inclines but... to challenge them again was the long incline towards the end of their outing . Rob & Lou looked after a few back markers while Rich took the rest towards their finish.
I must say as I arrived back with our group I saw so many 'red faces' from the other group leave the car park in their cars - apparently they ran most of the 1.7m and loved it!
My group helped by Ste & Mandy decided to teach them the fun and skill of running 'off road'. Our route was undulating course and had an added temptation - the smell of chip fat, batter & vinegar to tempt us. !
Apparently ALL our group were spotted at the Chippy after their outing with us. I don't blame them; as we ended up going further than planned 1.9m.
That said the group liked the fact we jogged a loop rather than cover the same ground and they enjoyed chatting about their new found surroundings. they found see att. route.
All the groups performed light stretches as their warm down."

Beginner's Diary - 17th June...
"20 beginners set off as a group on their walk warm up, the group was then divided up into their smaller groups; based on ability [each with two Harrier leaders.]  All the groups ventured further afield this week [having over come their fear of been 'see' in session of jog / walk . The ones who had never run before commented on how easier this weeks session felt even though the group had progressed this week by jogging further than last week ! & they also managing to jog up a steady incline, with ease - well done.
All the groups jogged further this week and those who had some previous experience of running successfully completed 1.7 miles and two hills ! on their route.
All the groups then performed light stretches as their warm down."

Beginner's Diary - 10th June..
We were able able to split the large group into 5 smaller groups based on ability; [..each with two leaders.]
We had planned on running along the roadside but had to improvise on our intended route as we overheard some beginners talking of their fear of being seen by others as they passed by in cars. We changed plans and jogged along a route where their was tree cover and the groups would not be seen by the general public. Never thought of that one but we quickly changed to accommodate some peoples fear.
1st week went very well and was well supported by members.

Our Club Beginners Sessions have 3 aims:

1. To have fun -
2. To train safely -
3. To make friends -

We are running a  'Beginners Club' of 6 (six) sessions on a Thursday night at 6.30pm from our HQ at Horsehay Village Golf Centre. All beginners are welcome, as long as you are over 18, regardless of your shape, size or ability (- if you CAN run further or faster already -  our 7pm sessions may be more appropriate.)
The only gear you need is something you feel comfortable running in. If you need any advice - we'll be happy to help.

The sessions will commence on Thursday, June 10th at 6.30pm.
Each session will be of 25 minutes approx in length .
Each session will begin with a short walk to warm up, then a jog, then finishing with some light stretching exercises as a warm down.

Over the period of 6 weeks, we aim to extend the duration of your run - but don't worry if you can't go very far to start with, it will be run/walk.
All runners will be under the supervision some of our senior club members, (..specially selected for their friendliness!..) who understand just what it is like to start from scratch.

Over the training period, we hope to help you progress and will try and set you suitably challenging targets in a supportive environment.

We have a Facebook Group where you can post your thoughts - and you are welcome to register on and use our Club Forum
