For certain people running is the fabric of their lives, ask any member of a running club how important running is to them and you will get a unified voice from all saying 'hugely important'.
Every now and then we are able to use our love for running to create good, to support a cause or be part of something bigger than ourselves. This is the case for husband and wife runners Andy and Lisa Pigg.
On Sunday 9th September Andy and Lisa will be taking part in the Simply Health Great North Run Half Marathon, not just to test themselves but to raise money for a fantastic cause in SMA UK (Spinal Muscular Atrophy), running in memory of Harvey Bailey.
Andy has been a Telford Harrier for 3 years, coming thought the couch to 5k program in 2016. Since then Andy has developed into a fantastic runner. Lisa runs for Lawley Running Club and also progressed via the Couch to 5k program in 2017.
So what made this husband and wife running duo take on the 13.1 miles of Newcastle roads to raise money. Well SMA UK is a charity extremely close to both, Harvey was the same age Andy & Lisa's son, Alfie, but sadly lost his battle in February 2009 two weeks after finding out he had Type 1 Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Harvey would have celebrated his tenth birthday in June this year.
SMA UK were a great comfort to Harvey's parents back then, who have now become life-long friends to Andy and Lisa. Various friends and family members have supported this charity over the last nine years and this year its their time to help.
Lisa said: "I started my Couch to 5k journey just over a year ago and after an ankle injury set back last October, I have now completed three 10k races. So the Great North run 2018 will be my first (official) half marathon. Andy started his running journey two years ago although people think he has been running much longer than this. He has run various 10k, half marathons and relays, too many to mention! This is a training run for the Valencia Marathon he is running in December of this year."
Andy and Lisa are raising money via Just Giving, which can be visited and donated too here: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/lisa-andypigg1
There is also a charity race night being organised on September 21st to continue the great charity work being done by these dedicated runners.
So as the 9th September draws closer, our running family want to wish both Andy and Lisa all the luck in the world on their fundraising and running journey.
