As we roll into May the races come thick and fast which signalled a busy few weeks for the Telford Harriers. With the weather turning for the better, our green and gold runners could be seen attending races and events up and down the country as the race calendar kicks in to overdrive.
Market Drayton 10k
This is a firm favourite in the Harriers calendar which always has a great turn out. Places usually sell up fast for this popular event which was the case for the 2019 event.
Voted the best UK 10k in 2012, 2013, 2014 & 2015 as well as Best UK Race 2014 (Runners World) the route takes you through Market Drayton and is described as mostly flat but undulating in places. There's a short steep hill at around the 5.5 mile point which tests every runner in the race.
But let's not forget the real reason this race is so popular, the famous goody bag waiting for everyone at the end, surely its about the yoghurt and pork pie, right?
With over 40 Harriers taking part, and the sun coming out to play, this was set up to be a fantastic race. Results as follows:
With some fantastic running by all our Harriers despite the heat, we saw some 10k PB performances from Michael Webb, Sara Meredith, Mark Rogers, Madhu Nachiappan, Jacynta Walsh, Sam McLelland, Faye Shieber and Marie Ruscoe as well as several course PBs being hit too.
Karen Foreman finished 1st in her age category which also saw her gain free entry into the 2020 race.
We have a small number of Parkrunners out before the Market Drayton race too, working on their 5k times or just as a leg loosener for the Sundays racing.
Ashley Kirkham - Wolves Parkrun - 23:46 - New 5k PB
Jim Vidler - Wolves Parkrun - 27:05 Sue Price - Stafford Parkrun - 36:22 - New 5k PB
The week earlier saw a very special Parkrun as club runners Jim and Natalie celebrated their wedding day with a run around Telford Parkrun.
Jim and Natalie met in 2015 and a running event and Jim popped the question on New Years Day a year ago at the very same spot. So to celebrate their wedding day they kicked off the morning with a nice wedding 5k run supported by our green and gold runners, including our own Tania Willoughby who ran round in her bridesmaids dress in 31:06!!!
From all at Telford Harriers, we wish you a long and happy (running) life together and were happy to be able to start your day off with a green and gold bang!
Other parkruns on this weekend were as follows:
Andy Dippie - Sunderland Parkrun - 22:27 - 2nd in age category
Dave O'Loughlin - Telford Parkrun - 22:29
Kerry Tostevin - Telford Parkrun - 24:27 - New 5k PB
Phil Shieber - Telford Parkrun - 25:09
Kelly Mackay - Telford Parkrun - 25:42
Tracy Magoo - Telford Parkrun - 29:53
Milton Keynes Half Marathon
The MK Half Marathon starts from one of the fabulous Milton Keynes landmarks, the stadiumMK. The first five miles are on wide roads and tree lined boulevards, giving runners a chance to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy some enthusiastic spectator support.
The half marathon route then continues through picturesque Woughton-on-the-Green and Woolstone parishes, where the half marathoners split from the full marathon course at mile seven.
At mile seven, the half marathon route bears right into the lush Ouzel Valley and then onto the very picturesque Caldecotte Lake then back for a victory lap of the stadiumMK football pitch and that magical stadium finish!
Gus Erlandson was our lone runner who finished in 1.43.54 in position 382th from 2589 and 6th in age from 66 in group.
Life Pretty Muddy 10k
The Pretty Muddy Weston Park route is a single lap, circular route around its beautiful grounds making it the perfect setting for an event like this. The course is a mixture of path, tracks and grass, it is mostly flat but there are some hills offering some scenic views over Shropshire and Staffordshire.
Both Fern Millard and Lisa Butler braved the mud and water to take on this course both coming home in 1:46:16. Fantastic effort from our girls here.
Fern, along with Sue Price, also took on the 40 miles in April challenge with both ladies completing the distances and getting their virtual medals.
In other news
Hannah Bandy, fresh from completing the London Marathon was able to secure a 5k PB in a 5,000 meter time trial taking 29 seconds off her best time and registering 27:01.
And so ends a busy few weeks for the Harriers as we look forward to the 2nd Sexarathon race midweek.
