County Runners Top the Bill

In a relatively busy weekend for the Telford Harriers we were celebrating two of our runners being selected to run for the county at the Meerbrook 15k road race as well as many other runners being busy in a number of other races up and down the UK.

Meerbrook 15k

Set in the heart of the Staffordshire moorlands with views over the cheshire plain and beyond this  testing course is now a regular fixture in many runners diary!

Harriers had two runners selected to run for Shropshire at the race, Dean Aston and Michael Smith and both were looking to put in solid performances for the country.

Approx 2,000 runners entered this race which was a testing route with several hills to negotiate. Course records are still held by two GB Internationals in the form of Andi Jones and Gemma Steele, which indicates the level of competition at this race.

Team Shropshire put in a fantastic performance securing the inter team trophy for 1st place with our runners coming home as follows:

4th: Dean Aston - 00:57:28 20th: Michael Smith - 1:00:26

Torbay Half Marathon

June 23rd saw the 28th running of this very popular seaside event.

The Torbay Half Marathon route is a traffic free two lap route which starts and finishes on Paignton seafront, taking in the stunning coastal views across Torbay. Starting with one lap of Paignton Green before heading towards Torquay, where the course passes the historic Torre Abbey and by the Princess Gardens where you will start the return back to Paignton.

Four of our runners took part at this event, all running well and securing the following results:

Newport & District 10k

The Newport 10k is always a popular race with local running clubs across Shropshire. The race starts and ends at Longford Hall and is mainly off-road taking runners through the beautiful countryside to Edgmond.

The race is well marshalled and sign posted to ensure runners know their way and there was a water station at approximately halfway, in addition to water provided at the finish, to keep runners hydrated.

Advertised as a family event, there was a one mile fun run around the grounds at Longford Hall which saw runners of all ages with fancy dress being optional.

We had a number of runners taking part in the event, coming home with the following results:

10th: Jamie Anderson - 00:43:39

21st: Darren Owen-Jones - 00:46:47

214th: Lisa Butler - 1:27:40
