Another hot sunny day broke on Sunday 5th August as a small number of Harriers runners made their way to Cannock Case to run the 10k trail race.
Based in the Area of Outstanding Natural beauty, the Cannock Chase 10K is a tough, hilly course offering an off road alternative to most conventional 10K road races. Surrounded by nature, woodlands and peace, runners are safe in the knowledge that there is no concrete and no traffic. Running through the heart of the forest, the course takes in some of Cannock’s finest scenery, starting and finishing at Birches Valley Forest Centre.
As10:30 fast approached 685 runners assembled on the start line at Lady Hill Coppice ready to take on the course, with the heat already bearing down. As the gun sounded the masses heading into the forest quickly picking up the Fairoak trail. The route continues through Stony Brook and past the Stony Brook Pools crossing a welcomed cool stream.
From there the route took runners up to the top of Jockey Hill and parallel to Marquis Drive. Then a loop around and down to the Fairoak Pools. The first hill section came, racing uphill for another quick loop before returning to the Fairoak Trail and back through Stony Brook.
As the runners came to the final climb back to Lady Hill Coppice, Harriers very own Chris Doran was in a commanding position and crossed the line in 25th position with a time of 43:41, bettering his 2017 time by over 2 mins.
It was a fantastic run by Chris in testing weather conditions.
Simon Ares (image 1 below) was the next Harriers male over the line, Simon ran a great race in the heat and securing a time of 1:05.42 and crossing the line in 385th place.
First Harrier lady over the line was Marie Mason (Image 2 below), coming home in 500th position and a time of 1:09.16 followed by Allison Canham (image 3 below) at 1:16.46
