In a relatively quiet race weekend it was Parkrun that provided a platform for Harriers runners to shine.
Telford Parkrun is a free 5k timed run, staged every Saturday morning at 9am in Telford Town Park over mainly tarmac and trail pathways.
Parkrun in Telford was first staged on 16th February 2013 with the current fastest time around the course being 14:39, set by Chris Davies on 03rd August 2013, Parkrun's 24th run in its history.
This record time has long been the target of all Parkrunners, but will take some beating after the course changed several years ago to include a steep uphill finish. Nonetheless, every runners standing on the start line has always dreamt of beating that long standing record, or at least winning a Parkrun one day!
That thought was in Telford Harrier runners last Saturday as they lined up to tackle Telford's 281st run. All 658 runners readied their watches to either enjoy a leisurely tun, or shoot for that 5k PB as the clock struck 9am.
As the race got under way three of our runners took commanding positions in the top 15 spots.
Dean Aston, Michael Smith and Victor Bennett were all at the head if the 658 string field pushing for a 5k PB around these 2 lap circuit.
As the race unfolded it was Dean Aston who fought for the lead with South London Harriers runner, Andrew Hughes while Michael Smith was having hos own battle for 3rd and 4th spots with Telford AC runner, Robert Norman.
As the top 4 runners rounded the amphitheatre and tackled the finishing hill, Dean stretched out a small lead and crossed the line as Parkrun #281 overall winner, his first in his running career, in a PB time of 16:54.
Michael Smith was able to stave off Norman to retain 3rd spot in a time of 17:47, and Victor Bennett held onto 14th spot in a time of 19:31.
Amanda Merrkick also ran a great race finishing in 282nd place in a time of 29:54.
