Midweek Action Spells Quiet Weekend for Harriers

In a relatively quiet weekend of racing it was Parkrun that took priority in the Harriers race calendar with many trying to improve their 5k times. However, there were a few exceptions to the rule....

Simplyhealth Great Manchester Run

The Great Run series of events are well known within the UK, most notably the Great North Run. However last weekend saw the Great Manchester Run take place, and event that staged a half marathon in the morning, and the more widely participated 10k in the afternoon.

Michael Smith was our only competitor at this event, one he had been training for for several weeks and looking to secure a PB performance.

Michael was representing the British Stammering Association and raising money through his running.

Over 18,000 runners packing into the centre of Manchester to run either the half marathon or 10k with the TV cameras fixed on athletes such as 5,000m world champion Hellen Obiri, Team GB's Steph Twell  and 2015 New York City Marathon and 2012 Paris Marathon winner Stanley Biwott, all of who were contesting the Elite titles for 2019.

Michael was starting at the sharp end of the race with the elite men and fast club runners. As the gun sounded they headed off on Portland Street where the course took them down onto the A56 towards Old Trafford and then back towards Deansgate. The finish line was at Great Bridgewater Street where a huge crowd of supporters where there to cheers the runners home.

Michael produced an excellent performance securing a 10k PB and coming home in 35:27 and in 70th position!

Worcester Half Marathon

Worcester Full and Half Marathon is now in its eighth year and has grown consistently over that time. The race is based at Six Ways Rugby Stadium where the Worcester Warriors team play.

As with Manchester, we had a lone runner at this event in the form of Sam McLelland.

Both distances started at 9:30am in Offerton Lane, a five-minute walk from the Rugby Club. The Half Marathon accompanied the Full for the first lap before splitting away at mile 11 and heading back where both races finish in front of the Worcester Warriors Ground.

Sam put in a great performance in securing 9th in her age category and coming home in 1:58.02 over what was a tough, hilly course.

A massive well done to Sam.

Clun Valley Challenge

Georgina Westwood took part in this 26 or 16 mile walk challenge which is organised by St Georges Primary School PTA. Now in its 16th year, this event has grown into a great Challenge event raising thousands of pounds for our children.

Both routes offer some challenging Shropshire Hills (approximately 4300’ of ascent). The scenery is spectacular and the route consists of tracks, bridleways, footpaths and a minimal amount of quiet road walking/running. There are 3 manned checkpoints on the 26 mile route and 2 on the 16 mile route, with refreshments in addition to self clip passage controls.

Georgina completed the 16 mile option in good time and raising awareness for childrens charities.

Parkrun Roundup

A busy Saturday morning of Parkrun was on the cards with the vast majority of running activities for the Harriers being at various Parkruns around the local area.
