More Marathon Madness for Harriers

After the success of Manchester Marathon just 7 days ago, our Telford Harriers were out in force again looking to complete another 26.2 miles in the green and gold. We also had a number of runners competing in 10k and 5k races around the Midlands, all of which make up this weeks race report.

Peterborough Marathon

This is a brand new race for Peterborough but has already been labeled as a wonderful race, full of history and beautiful scenery. Peterborough Marathon is mainly a flat marathon course, that takes in the spectacular sights of the river Nene, the Green Wheel network of cycle routes and the beautiful Ferry Meadows in the grounds of Nene Park.

The race is all on tarmac roads and pathways, but is a 95% traffic free route offering runners a safe and beautiful environment to enjoy the challenge of taking on the Marathon. Race HQ was the stunning Marriott Hotel, which resides on 11 acres of lush, gorgeously landscaped grounds in Peterborough, just three miles from the city centre and a stone’s throw from the beautiful Ferry Meadows.

Jon and Sonia Edmonds were out representing Telford Harriers for this race, with both putting in some excellent running.

Jon came away with a category win, and a huge 5min PB completing the course in 3:18:32

Sonia also managed a marathon PB knocking 2 mins from her old best with a time of 4:39:21

Boston Marathon & Half Marathon

This is known as the flattest marathon and half marathon course in the Country! This event is held on the same day as the famous US Boston marathon - but the organisers of this race don't run a ballot!!

The race's, combined with the fun run, all start at a single point in Boston Market place. After 4 miles, shortly after the second drinks station the Full Marathon branches to the left, whilst the Half Marathon continues through Butterwick turns right at the Five Bells Inn. Half a mile later the Half Marathon re-joins the Full route with both races ending at Boston College.

Ashley Kirkham was making his Telford Harrier debut after joining the club a few weeks earlier. Ashley smashed the marathon, knocking a huge 80mins from his old best and coming home in 4:08:26

Rich Palmer was also running this race but unfortunately had to pull out at mile 22. Still a great performance and Rich will no doubt be back soon.

Vic Doran was our only competitor at the half marathon distance and registered a fantastic time of 1:42:25

In Other News

Warwickshire's best kept secret for road runners, Draycote Water 10k offers smooth, flat road with stunning reservoir and countryside views.

Running alongside the water, using dam wall pathways and a perimeter service road, runners experience beautiful views of nature trails, wildlife and boats on the water .

Some short inclines and downhill stretches keep the landscape changing, so the route doesnt get too familiar.

Hannah Bandy was our lone green and gold runner for this race as she warms up for London marathon later this month. Hannah breezed around the course, notching her fastest 10k time since 2015, coming home in 133rd place and with a time of 58:59

Fordhouses 5k race is a Friday night off-road race on canal towpath and pavement around Pendeford, starting and finishing at Fordhouses Cricket Club, Wobaston Road, Wolverhampton.

Newly joined Harrier, Jim Vidler took part in his first race in the green and gold, registering a time of 24:50.
